Meet the "Hijarbie" Barbie making waves in the fashion world

Last week, Mattel made the biggest change in Barbie's history when it (finally) introduced a new range of body positive dolls that didn't conform to the brand's super-skinny stereotype.

And hot on the heels of the newly launched tall, curvy and petite Barbies, another variation of the dolls has caught our attention.

Meet Hijarbie, the world's first hijab wearing Barbie doll who is fast becoming an Instagram star.

Hijarbies were created by 24-year-old Haneefah Adam, from Nigeria, after she perused the popular Barbie Style Instagram account and decided she wanted to see Barbies that dressed the way she did, too.

She told Mic, "It got me thinking about how I'd actually like to see a doll dressed up like I would have — covered up.

"I was mulling about the idea for about three months while I was still studying for my master's degree in the U.K. When I got back to Nigeria, I went to the mall, purchased a doll, dressed it up, documented it and here we are."

Despite being set up less than two months ago, the Hijarbie account of beautiful "mini hijab fashion" already has nearly 8,000 followers and is making a positive impact across social media.

As well as posting pictures of the Hijarbies themselves, Adam also creates dolls based on Muslim fashion bloggers and their outfits.

These posts mirror a growing trend across the fashion world to bring more diversity to their campaigns: last year alone, clothing giant H&M made history when it featured it's first hijab-wearing model and Dolce & Gabbana launched an exclusive range of hijabs and abayas.

Adam hopes the account will inspire the millions of Muslim girls around the world who play with Barbie dolls to feel empowered. 

She said, "This is about having an alternative and creating an awareness of having toys that adopts your religion and culture and in your own likeness."

Instead of dressing up her dolls in clothes she wouldn't wear, hijabifying it will create a sense of belonging and hopefully make a positive impact."
