In this latest interview, Meghan also reveals that she only saw her signature five-metre-long veil on the morning of the wedding - such was the extent that she trusted Givenchy artistic director, Clare Waight Keller.

The silk veil was embroidered with floral detail representing all 53 countries of the Commonwealth, as well as two other of the bride’s favourite flowers; Wintersweet (found in the couple’s home grounds of Kensington Palace) and the California poppy (in a nod to Meghan’s roots).

“It was important for me, especially now being a part of the Royal Family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated,” she says. “And I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn’t know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together.

“And I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction, and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play, and the work that we’re going to continue to do within the Commonwealth countries.”

The dress is due to appear in a new exhibition at Windsor Castle, where the royal couple tied the knot at St George’s Chapel earlier this year.
