Step into our fashion time machine…
The Met Gala has been held since 1948, and has changed from an intimate fundraising dinner into a social event that fashion and celebrity fans alike eagerly await.
The theme of each year’s gala is taken from the spring exhibition at The Costume Institute, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it’s expected that guests will use that theme to inspire their outfit for the night.
The Met Gala is a chance for celebrities to be daring with their fashion choices, and the best outfits are shared and commented on widely on social media.
Iconic outfits have included Rihanna’s Pope look at last year’s event, Beyonce in a show stopping sheer sequinned Givency dress in 2015 and Cara Delevingne in a silver and black Chanel plunge suit with silver hair in 2017.
But what did the Met Gala’s red carpet look like pre-Instagram? We rewind 10 years to the red carpet for the 2009 Met Gala, which was co-chaired by Kate Moss and Justin Timberlake. Marc Jacobs was honorary chair, and the theme was The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion.
