As 2017 draws to a close, we’re looking back at this year’s most popular fashion items, as reported by global fashion search engine, Lyst.
Tracking 80 million shoppers from 120 countries and over 5 million fashion products, the comprehensive 2017 shopping round-up tells us which stylish items got us all talking this year.
From colour trends to must-have T-shirts, here are a few of our highlights.
Gucci reigned supreme
According to Lyst, searches for Gucci’s Marmont bag collection saw a spike of a whopping 102% immediately after the Italian design house’s catwalk show back in February. The most-searched items were the street style-approved belt bag, cross-body styles and purses. The good news? There are still plenty of styles in stock and we’re betting any one of the standout options will recharge your wardrobe (and your mood) in time for 2018.
And that’s not the only Gucci item that was trending, the now infamous logo T-shirt – which sparked a number of high street imitations, the most memorable being the ‘Merci Mon Cheri’ Topshop number, which also sold out – was another of 2017’s hero buys.
Retro denim revival
Naturally, denim was a popular search term, with Lyst’s data showing the hero fabric was searched for every 2 seconds this year. Style-wise, skinny jeans are still the most popular fit, however 2018 could be the year we finally move away from the super-skinny shape, with shoppers increasingly choosing straight-leg styles and ‘mom’ jeans instead.
The top spot went to Levi’s for their achingly cool blue Wedgie jeans, which have been spotted on a number of the impeccably dressed style set, including Camille Charriere and Chiara Ferragni. And much like any big denim trend, Topshop, Zara, H&M and more have offered up plenty of purse-friendly alternatives.
If you are in the market for vintage-style jeans, this year has also seen the rise of cult label RE/DONE, which has quickly become a fash-pack favourite and the destination for upcycled denim.
Fashion word of the year
Alongside shopping habits, Lyst has also charted the most used fashion word of 2017. Looking at more than 30,000 articles, the word ‘power’ was officially number one, coming in ahead of ‘woke’, ‘statement’ and ‘floral’.
The year of the earring
The catwalks called it during the a/w 2017 shows, with Fendi, Versace and Roksanda tempting us to try the trend, and Lyst has confirmed that earrings have officially replaced the necklace as the ultimate outfit add on, with tasseled styles proving to be most popular.
Colour is making a comeback
Unsurprisingly, neutral shades of black, grey, white and blue ruled throughout 2017, but bold, unexpected shades of red, pink and yellow were on the up. While we may not be ditching black altogether, more and more of us are embracing standout shades and chances are we will all be brightening up our wardrobes with a pop of colour in 2018.
Slip into a slider
Love them or loathe them, this summer was all about the pool slide. Yes, the simple slip-on is here to stay, and it was even revealed that Givenchy’s monochrome iteration was searched for once every seven seconds between April and July.
Other more unusual trends reported by Lyst included super-sized sleeves, unicorns, watermelon prints and, finally, designer sequin socks from, you guessed it, Gucci.
