Neon clothes to invest in and how to style them for spring and summer (or any other time you feel like nailing the trend)

The word ‘neon’ provokes two feelings in most of us; either it reminds us of iconic Eighties MTV videos or Kim Kardashian.

But neon is a style anyone can don – and it’s firmly back for 2019.

This season, the catwalk put neon centre stage. There was the Henry Holland show (not for the faint-hearted), featuring bright neon orange suits with clashing neon pink and purple footwear that screamed, ‘Look up everyone, I have arrived’.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum was Off-White, with its more discrete take on the trend courtesy of accessories: neon yellow sunglasses and yellow laces for your footwear.

Wherever you are on neon scale, we’ve created four looks to help you get familiar with it along with our styling tips.

1. For the neon novice

Sometimes you just want a splash of colour for spring.

Something that’s not ‘in your face’ loud, but makes people look twice and give a little nod of appreciation.

Enter the acid yellow top.

Pair it with neutrals to tone down your overall look so it’s perfect for the office and after-work drinks.

It works particularly well teamed with biscuit beige to create the perfect colour sandwich.

2. For the more initiated

Not all neon comes in Lycra.

For a more laid-back way to rock this hero item, opt for a wool-blend sweater and team it with denim for a relaxed summer vibe.

This oversized jumper works for both winter and summer (especially during the early evening when the weather gets cooler).

Tuck it into some mom jeans a la Tan Francis and you’re good to go.

3. For the bold

Sunshine is the best backdrop for bright colours, whether that’s in the city park or on the beach.

This Reserved tunic is perfect for Saturday summer vibes – the lyocell material will keep you super-cool in the heat as it’s more absorbent than cotton. Plus, it rolls up really small – ideal for carry-on luggage if you’re packing for a holiday.

Team with equally bold accessories and fill your Instagram. Sorted.

4. For the pro

Sportswear, check. Neon, check.

This bikini top that doubles up as a crop is for the trend pro.

It’s the perfect way to dabble yet commit. Style it by playing with proportions – team with some wide-fit jeans and flat slip-on sandals.
