Along with unexpected cake deliveries and meeting a cute dog on my morning commute, the Net-A-Porter summer sale is one of those things I’ve been hoping will happen every day recently. Now, finally, it has happened, it’s better than expected and I promise you all there will be no disappointments.

As a fashion editor I often spend my working life planning ahead – attending Christmas events in July is normal, along with perusing spring/summer fashion shows in winter. When it comes to sales, I think of them much the same way – plan ahead. I always create wish lists on my favourite sites so when it comes to sales day I can head to the edit of all the things I’ve liked throughout the year and instantly see if they’re now a fraction of the price.

Although the summer sales are perfect for getting all your pre-holiday outfits you know you’ll wear on the beach, planning ahead will mean you invest in pieces you know you’ll actually want to wear long after s/s 2019. Of course I’m all for getting that Cult Gaia bag you’ve seen what seems like a thousand times on Instagram, then there’s the latest ‘it’ dress from Ganni you’ve had your eye on – but, with this in mind if you’re going to splurge on designer at any time it’s wise to think about your style, how often you think you’ll wear each piece and if it’s in fact an impulsive ‘buy me now because I’m cheap’ kind of purchase, or one you genuinely love.

Call me a sensible Sally, but there’s something special about buying designer pieces you know you’ll wear for years to come. I still wear my first Celine (old Celine, of course) bag I got 5 years years ago and I still remember wearing the pair of Louboutin heels I couldn’t for the life of me walk in for my graduation.
