The internet is divided over this new Topshop item: “what fresh hell is this?”

There’s no denying that Topshop know their denim. In fact, over the past 12 months, the retailer has sold one pair of their iconic skinny jeans every 10 seconds – which is probably less time than it took you to read up until this point.

However it seems as if the retail giant’s latest foray into the world of denim isn’t exactly to everybody’s taste.

Say hello to the MOTO Clear Panel Mom Jean.

The official product description claims that “off-duty styling never looked so good”, before going on to explain: “Crafted from pure cotton, our MOTO mom jeans come in authentic mid blue rigid-look denim.

“Cut with a high-waist and a tapered leg, they are finished with multiple pockets, classic trims and cool clear knee panel detail.”

Topshop stylists advise that you wear the denims “folded at the cuffs” to keep them looking chic.

They’re priced at a cool £49 – and they have already received a five-star rating from one very satisfied customer.

But elsewhere, in the Twittersphere, people are seriously unimpressed.

“What fresh hell is this?” joked one.

Another added: “You know you need to stop online shopping when you come across ‘clear knee mom jeans’. Like, why? And who? And what?”

One more chimed in, writing (slightly savagely): “A friend just sent me the worst jeans I’ve ever seen.”

However, despite the horror of these customers, others seem to be big fans of the trend.

In fact, it’s sparked something of a rebellion on social media, with many refusing to ever “trust anyone who doesn’t support clear knee mom jeans” again.

If anything, it’s worth remembering that these jeans are a little more practical than the classic ripped knee, as they’re wipe-clean (ideal for gardening), and less likely to snag on… well, on anything. Plus, it’s definitely a fun and funky twist on an old staple.

Then again, we imagine that window is going to get pretty steamy in summer climes.
