All hail Prada for putting the classic backpack back on the map.
There’s always excitement around a new fashion launch — granted it’s heightened even further when it comes to a Prada collection — and this one is extra special. Miuccia Prada created the nylon backpack in 1984;fast-forward to 1987 and the bags had already reached an iconic status among the fashion elite. The surge for backpacks of course grew even further by the Nineties when they were the ultimate street-style bag to be seen with.

Of course fashion has evolved a lot since then, with fashion houses and high street brands having to think more and more about sustainability. So much so, even the likes of Net-A-Porter has created its new ’Net Sustain’ edit, where shoppers can find all their favourite ethical brands from Stella McCartney to Veja in one savvy sustainable spot. Talking of Veja trainers, there’s even now a 100% plant based completely biodegradable trainer created by Native Shoes.
Back to Prada — while its nylon bags used to be made from industrial-weight nylon used for army tents, the new Re-Nylon collection is made from sustainable materials. Showing the changing times and shifting world, we’re all for the new nylon bags making a resurgence.
Prada has re-inventing six classic styles for both women and men: the belt bag, shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag and of course two backpacks. The collection is made from ECONYL® which is obtained through the recycling and purification process of plastic waste collected from oceans, fishing nets and textile fibre waste. It’s a step towards Prada making all their nylon products completely sustainable by 2021 and we’re so happy they’ve started to make the transition.
Want to know why it’s even more amazing? The Prada group are also giving a percentage of all sales of the new bag collection to UNESCO which intends to increase education about sustainability to students all over the world.
The backpack in general is already back in the fashion limelight, and Prada’s Nylon style is loved by celebrities including model Bella Hadid, along with almost every fashion editor. Not only are they practical enough to carry everything from your laptop to your diary they’re also inevitably chic whoever you style them.
The Re-Nylon collection also has a re-invented Prada triangle logo on each bag that symbolises recycling and renewal. A designer bag purchase which makes us feel guilt-free? Okay, we are 100% sold.
