As anyone who lives in the UK will tell you, a good cover up is an essential part of any summer wardrobe.

From unexpected cold winds to sudden downpours, a seemingly warm day can turn in an instant, making us want to shrug a baggy cardigan over our shoulders or pull on a trusty knit. It's a sad fact of life that summer and autumn are, basically, interchangeable.

But once you've got yourself a beautiful summer cover up how do you style it? Head below to get ten effortless and gorgeous ideas on how to wear jumpers, knits and cardigans.

1. Co-ordinate

Co-ordinating your cover up with your accessories - from shoes to bags and hats - is a quick way to pull together your outfit.

2. Statement knits

Cheer up a grey summers day with a quirky statement knit that you can throw on over the rest of your outfit. Graphic patterns and vivid colours were spotted on the Autumn/Winter 2015 catwalks for Pucci, Dior and Loewe, so invest now in a patterned knit that will see you through next season.

3. Go big or go home

If you opt for a cardigan, go for a loose and baggy style that you can sling over yourself at the first hint of rain. We recommend choosing a neutral, muted colour, such as these sandy-toned cardigans, that will go with most colours.

4. Layering over and under

Layering is an important - nay, essential - part of dressing for a hot/cold/hot again British summer. Go for items in complementary colours and pair with laidback denim.

5. Fringing

There is something undeniably summery about fringing, so cover up in a knit or loose cardigan with some fringing detail. What chilly breeze?

6. Monochrome stripes

Black and white is a classic style combination that will never really fall out of favour. Opt for a loose monochrome cover up paired with black and white accessories.

7. Go short

If you can't quite bare the prospect of wearing a jumper in high summer, but still want to ward off the inevitable chill, opt for a warm knit with short sleeves. Throw on over a basic T or pair with a classic long-sleeved white shirt for a preppy look.

8. Pair with plenty of jewellery

Sometimes, when it comes to jewellery, more is more. Spruce up a casual, block colour cover up with strings of necklaces and heaps of bangles.

9. Off the shoulder knits

Off the shoulder knits are a great transitional piece for when the late summer months blend into autumn. Opt for a block colour and pair with casual jeans or dress it up with statement trousers.

10. Belt it

Big belts are one of the easiest trends for Autumn/Winter 2015 so get a head start on the new season by cinching in your cover up at the waist. Choose a classic leather belt in brown or black for a statement knit or experiment with studded and coloured styles for a more classic cover up.
