Fashion thrives off fantasy and extravagance. In an industry where the surreal and the extraordinary has become the ordinary, making quiet clothes can seem like a radical move.

So there’s something quite affirming when we see garments on the catwalk that the modern woman can actually wear and incorporate into her wardrobe seamlessly. Because surely I’m not the only one who still hasn’t mustered up the courage to go pant-less on my trip to the corner shop, à la the latest catwalk trend?

At this season’s spring/summer 2024 shows, there was a newfound emphasis on clothes that are wearable. Classic staples were donned by models across all four cities, highlighting a move from designers towards the subtle and subdued.

Take Tove, for example, whose denim jeans looked not dissimilar to your regular Levi’s 501s. And you can always count on Jil Sander and Peter Do to deliver minimalism at its most luxurious. Even Gucci, who has been known to take a more maximalist stance, drew back this season at Sabato De Sarno’s debut, with subtle skirts and mini-dress combos.
