Iconic British designer Zandra Rhodes gives Stylist the lowdown on her 1973 thigh tattoo and why feminism is a pointless word...
When was the last time you hid?
I never hide. My nature is quite courageous and bold – I express this through fashion.
What’s in your handbag?
My phone, my keys, wallet, make-up, camera, diary, pens and pencils, headache pills, sunglasses and several pairs of glasses, I’m always taking them off and putting them down!
Do you have any tattoos, if so what?
I have one tattoo of a tiny lily on my thigh, I had it done in 1973.
Sedan chair: good idea or a bad idea?
A good idea. Nothing wrong with a bit of luxury.
What are you most ashamed of?
Not doing enough exercise.
Is the world getting better, or worse?
Cheese or chocolate?
Chocolate of course.
What was your finest hour?
When I was award the CBE by the Queen. I felt extremely proud.
What does feminism means to you?
To me it’s a pointless word that doesn’t really mean anything. You don’t need to label confidence or strength, you just need to be you.
Which part of your home do you like best?
The penthouse and garden, I love the terrace with its camellia trees.
What’s guaranteed to make you cry?
A sad film.
What do you dream about at night?
I don’t dream, actually.
Complete the sentence: Britain needs more…
Are you a lover or a fighter?
A fighter probably.
Have you left the gas on?
No. Definitely not.
