From Kate Moss and Johnny Depp to Kim and Kanye; The most memorable couple moments at Cannes

Published

It's not often we get to see the power couples of entertainment put on a PDA.

The majority of them keep their private life exactly that. So, when they hit up the red carpet, not only do we get the chance to see some of the world's best dressers come together in a moment of sartorial harmony but we also get to ogle the chemistry between couples we rarely get to see side by side.

And the Cannes Film Festival, which kicked off yesterday, has always provided excellent red carpet fodder when it comes to couples having a moment. From Charles and Diana to Ryan Gosling and Sandra Bullock (yes, really), take a look back at the most breathtaking and charming red carpet appearances of the last few decades.

  • Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman

    The Date: 15 May 2000

The Details: Back in the early Noughties, Uma and Ethan were still very much together. At that year's festival, Uma was promoting Vantel, a movie about  Louis XIV. She had given birth to their first child in 1998 and had taken some time off to look after their daughter Maya Ray. She later gave birth to their son Levon in 2002. The couple divorced in 2005.

  • Sean Penn and Robyn Wright-Penn

    The Date: 15 May 2001

The Details: While Sean Penn might now be with Charlize Theron, for a long time he was married to Robin Wright Penn, now better known as Claire Underwood (of course). Here, they took a trip to the iconic festival to promote The Pledge, which he produced. The couple met in 1990, while they were working on State of Grace, and while they had one of the longest marriages in Hollywood, they eventually divorced in 2010, after numerous break-ups. Robin's nickname for Sean was 'the Loving Nightmare'. Gulp. The couple were both dressed in black and looked incredible.

  • Kate Moss and Johnny Depp

    The Date: 1998

The Details: Apparently the couple attended this Cannes festival as just friends, having broken up not that long before. Johnny was promoting Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and said that they had broken up but that he still cared about her. "Kate is somebody I care about deeply. We were together for four years, and she's a great, lovely, sweet, pure girl, really a great kid, and I care about her. I love her on a very deep, profound level. Distance is very difficult when you're trying to maintain a relationship, when you're thousands of miles apart for a lot of time. We still see each other, hang out and talk on the phone. We're close, but I'm not with anybody at all." [via]

The Details: At the Captives film premiere, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds still looked very much the newlyweds even though they were married in September 2012. At the end of 2014 Blake gave birth to their daughter James which means (according to our non-existent medical qualifications) that Blake was pregnant here. She looked as elegant as ever in a monochrome Gucci gown and managed to avoid looking too matchy-matchy with Ryan who also opted for black and white.
