AJ Odudu, 30, is a television presenter, radio DJ and fitness blogger – a career which means she’s always on the move. Switching it up from screen to gym can result in multiple outfits to account for, but Odudu has one wardrobe trick that keeps her on her feet: a pair of hard-working kicks. Here’s how they fit into her day…
“As the co-founder of Get To Know a female networking and events series that aims to connect women in business – empowerment is important to me. Personally, I think fashion can be really powerful as it gives me confidence.
I like my style to reflect my personality, in the sense that I wear what depends on my mood. I go for clothes that are fun, comfortable and bold, and I like to mix it up. To me, dresses don’t have to mean heels; you can team them with a stylish pair of trainers for that perfect high-low street style. My go-tos are my Timberland Kiri Ups because they’re comfortable enough to keep me on my feet, but their nude colourway goes with so many of my clothes.
Fitness is something I also find empowering, so I usually start my days around 7.15am when and head straight to the gym. At the moment, I’m loving the hour-long HIIT and resistance classes at F45 Tottenham Court Road, but if I don’t have time I’ll go for a 6k run around Greenwich Park. My friends always call me the bag lady because once I leave the house I’m out all day, so I have to pack all of my outfits.
Once I’m dressed, I’ll head to breakfast. I work better in the mornings, so I try and combine this with a meeting. I love the Riding House Café as it’s great for something quick and healthy, which works perfectly for my lifestyle. I live by the motto of always protecting your own energy and focusing on yourself. If it doesn’t evolve you, it shouldn’t involve you, so don’t worry about what everyone else is doing. Your focus should be your own path, in everything from your style to your career choices.
After my meetings, I’ll head to 4Music studios in Victoria where I present Trending Live from 4pm-6pm. We’ll do a script read-through and I’ll spend some time researching the guests I’ll be interviewing before I present the show live. During the day, my style is quite relaxed but in the evenings, I like to ramp up the glamour. Often I’ll be DJing or attending an event, so I’ll change into a dress or a miniskirt. Since I’ll often be standing up for long periods, my shoes need to be practical but cute. The detailing on my Timberland Kiri Ups gives them an extra edge for evenings and I can dress them up by wearing them with some gold anklets.
I’ve actually always had Timberlands in my wardrobe. After Destiny’s Child released Lose My Breath and Beyoncé wore a pair of Timberland boots with Evisu jeans in the video, they sold out in Blackburn, where I grew up. But I also had a pair of Timberland knee-high lace-up boots, which I absolutely loved. Now that they’ve evolved into more of a fashion-focused brand, I’ve added more than just their durable boots to my collection.”
