It’s the biggest event in the fashion calendar and one of the most exclusive tickets of the year and now, the Met Ball has its own film.
Starring the doyenne of fashion, Anna Wintour, herself, The First Monday in May takes a look behind the scenes at the creation of the 2015 fashion exhibition China: Through the Looking Glass and its opening gala – and you can watch the first trailer exclusively.
China: Through the Looking Glass became the most attended fashion exhibition in the history of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, welcoming over three-quarters of a million visitors during its four-month run. It documented Chinese-inspired Western fashions, and was the jumping-off point for inspiration for guests attending the Met Ball.
The film sees acclaimed documentarist Andrew Rossi follow Vogue editor-in-chief Wintour (co-chair of the gala) and exhibition curator, Andrew Bolton, for the eight months leading up to the ball.
The fundraising gala has grown in prestige every year, described by iconic Vogue contributor André Leon Talley as “the Super Bowl of social fashion events”
Just as The September Issue gave fashion fans an insider look at the creation of Vogue’s iconic beginning of season issue, The First Monday in May will allow viewers to peek inside an exclusive world usually reserved for the fashion elite.
The 2015 gala saw celebrities including George Clooney, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber in attendance, and saw Rihanna wear her infamous yellow dress for a live performance.

The trailer, which you can watch below, gives an insight into the pressure and mania leading up to the event. Opening with Anna Wintour saying, “Fashion can create a dream, create a fantasy. It’s a kind of theatre,” we then get a glimpse into the sheer magnitude of the event, and the enormity of organisation involved.
From the politics of seating plans – with Wintour saying of one guest: “OK, but can he not be on his cellphone the entire time, though” – to the cost of hosting A-listers (“We can’t lose [Rihanna], right? We just didn’t realise how expensive…”) the trailer promises a drama-filled feature.
The First Monday in May will give a real insight into the fashion industry – with a no-holds-barred documentary.
The film also investigates the question as to whether fashion is truly an art form, or a mere commodity. The film sees Rossi interview designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gautier and John Galliano.
“I think fashion should be recognised when it touches people and moves people – I mean what more can you ask from art?” says Wintour.
The First Monday in May is in cinemas nationwide from 30 September
