There's little doubt J.W. Anderson is hot business right now. Fashion editors have been raving over his innovative use of texture and colour for some time and his much-anticipated debut line for Topshop has only accelerated the hype. Despite being more in demand than cupcakes in a post-lunch slump, the Irish designer - who has developed a cult following over the past few years - still took time out of his hectic SS13 show schedule to catch up with Stylist about all things knitwear, Cate Blanchett and why he loves London. Here's what he had to say...
If you could design a black tie outfit for anyone in the public eye, who would it be and why?
Cate Blanchett. She’s the sharpest and talented woman there is.
Why the love affair with knitwear?
Because knitwear is so versatile. You can team it with anything and there is so much to explore within it.
Which item of clothing in your Topshop collection do you predict will be most popular and why?
Probably the bat sweater, it has humour in it.
JW Anderson is a big fan of Cate Blanchett
What's the best thing about being a designer in London?
The freedom to be able to express whatever you want without boundaries. London has such character and a rawness about it that is so inspiring.
What does fashion mean to you?
Something that keeps me stimulated everyday and keeps me alive.
Who or what inspires you?
Everything and everyone around me. My designs are like pictorial dialogue of what I see and the people that are close to me.
Optical prints were a clear theme in JW Anderson's SS13 collection
Do you have any personal style rules?
It is all about separates and it has to be comfortable, but sometimes extreme.
If someone wanted to invest in a designer piece, what would you suggest?
Bag, definitely a bag, they can be timeless yet edgy. A bag can change an outfit or make an old outfit look new and on trend.
