The originator of memorable fashion proverbs like “Pink is the navy blue of India” and “the bikini is the biggest thing since the atom bomb”, Diana Vreeland was one of the most influential fashion editors of the 20th century.

Now the career and extraordinary life of a key figure in fashion history is to be the subject of a documentary film - Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel. Hitting cinemas this September (perfect timing in the month of fashion weeks), judging by the trailer, it’s set to be must-see viewing.

During her time at US Harper’s Bazaar and at the helm of US Vogue in the swinging sixties, the self-styled ‘Empress of fashion’ launched Twiggy’s career, advised Jackie O and entertained New York’s arts and society set from her red living room (which she called “a garden in hell”). After she was abruptly fired from Vogue in 1971, she went on to transform the New York Met’s Costume Institute into the world class fashion museum it is today.

Directed by Lisa Immordino Vreeland (who is married to Alexander Vreeland, the grandson of Diana), and featuring contributions from fashion greats such as Anna Sui, Manolo Blahnik, Diane von Furstenberg and Calvin Klein, the film promises to be an intimate portrait of a real fashion character, whose ‘Why Don’t You’ column in Harper’s Bazaar suggested readers “rinse your blond child’s hair in dead Champagne to keep its gold”!).
