When the political landscape is in disarray, austerity is hitting harder than ever before and the news has been relentlessly bad, we could do with a little lightness in our lives.

Step forward, a fresh and deliciously eccentric new trend that’s captured the imagination of the Instagram crowd.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen more and more people post snaps of themselves dressed in self-styled “watermelon dresses”.

While dogs and babies are ripe for the optical illusion trick, it seems a load of grown-ups are getting in on the action, too.

All you need to take part is a plump slice of the pink stuff, fashioned as you please. Then, play around with perspective and focus to get the blush-hued gown of your dreams.

To really get the effect going like a pro, it helps if you're not wearing all that much. However, former Spice Girl Emma Bunton is one watermelon wannabe who tried out the look on a trip to Heart radio recently; and she pulled it off with aplomb - fully dressed.

A quick search under the #watermelondress hashtag on Instagram reveals more people are seizing the moment with the fruit reflex every day. Grab a flavour of watermelon movement with our pick of a few particularly creative styles, below.
