Work Life: Bethan Lewis, vice-president of HR at global jewellery brand Pandora

Published

Bethan Lewis, 39, is vice president of HR at global jewellery brand Pandora. She lives in Wimbledon with her partner, Matt and at weekends, her 14 and 12-year-old stepsons.

"I love mornings so even when I’m tired, I’m looking forward to the day ahead. I decide what to wear the evening before, so I can squeeze in a trip to the gym before my early commute.

The most reliable pieces in my wardrobe are a well-fitting, smart pair of jeans or trousers with my favourite black Sandro dinner jacket that goes with anything. Simple, silk shirts are my favourite and I wear block, mid heels as we have ergonomic desks – and there is a lot of standing involved.

My train journey is quiet so a great time to read a book or catch up on my emails. We provide breakfast in the office and I have a sweet tooth, so a good coffee and yoghurt with granola and honey will set me up for the day.

I love meeting people and identifying the right talent to join the team. I am responsible for developing those people and ensuring we have a brilliant working environment that energises our employees. The welfare of our employees is so important, so it's key that I can be able to ensure we have a strong wellbeing programme, great benefits, development opportunities and that my door is always open for people.

If I had to pick one stand-out moment from my time here I would say it would be visiting our production facilities in Thailand. I first visited a few years ago and was incredibly impressed by the whole organisation. Each piece of jewellery is handmade – which is astounding when you consider in 2014 alone over 91 million pieces were manufactured.

Working for a jewellery brand has really taught me that accessorising is everything. One day I might choose a simple pair of studs with a silver bangle, and other days I will wear a couple of ring stacks and layered necklaces. My favourite piece of jewellery is my Pandora Essence bracelet which is very special to me – it is different to our traditional charm bracelet in that each charm represents a different inner value, such as Faith, Wisdom or Loyalty. It adds a really personal touch to any outfit.

The most rewarding part of my job is the development of our employees. Having been here since the beginning, I have seen so many people who I recruited at a junior level progress within the organisation and that is hugely rewarding. Someone I recruited in 2010 as a receptionist became a trainer and is now a retail operations manager, which is amazing.

If I hadn’t gone into HR, my plan B would have been to be a teacher or a children’s nurse. My nephew was treated for cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital this year and the level of care and support that they provided for him and my sister and brother in-law was awe inspiring. Those doctors and nurses are so kind and capable and the difference they make to people’s lives is remarkable.

After work, I might do a barre core class, meet friends for dinner or cook at home with Matt. I change out of my work clothes the moment I step through the door. I love the White Company and Hush for lounge/nightwear and freshen up with Neal’s Yard products before bed – their orange flower facial oil is divine.

My style out of work is a lot more casual. I live in Whistles jeans, Claudie Pierlot sweatshirts and Breton tops are my favourite, in every colour.”
