While her words are reassuring, there is still very little research in this area.

Gabby, a paramedic studying for a postgraduate degree in trauma science, even searched her university database for an evidence-based trial around the subject… but came back empty-handed.

“I found it really hard to put into words how I was feeling,” she says. “I think a lot of that is because it’s not a ‘known thing’ that happens – there isn’t any information from other sources, so it’s really difficult for you to feel validated. I remember trying to have a conversation with my ex, and I was just saying things like, ‘I don’t really know what I’m feeling, but it’s like I’m not the same person anymore.’ He obviously just didn’t get it.”

I remember going through the same sort of thought process in the weeks after having my implant removed. Feeling out of sorts but unable to find a logical reason why. I had stopped taking hormones, for goodness sake, so why did I feel so unlike myself? That made the whole experience extremely isolating; I didn’t want to voice my thoughts aloud and chat it through with my then-partner because it would have felt like admitting the relationship was over.

But although there may not be any specific evidence-based trials to back the post-pill clarity up, medical opinion is that there is some truth to my hypothesis.
