“We must provide spaces for health professionals to learn and ask questions in a safe and non-judgmental environment,” she adds. “I’ve seen effective change happen when we can engage different stakeholders across the space and have health professionals able to share and learn from practical and lived experience.”

Ultimately, Lloyd says that it all boils down to needing “more interest, investment and innovation in endometriosis and all women’s health conditions” if we’re to stop this kind of advice from being dished out.

Here’s the shock twist: since giving birth to my daughter 18 months ago, my symptoms have, in fact, improved. But that fact doesn’t offer much solace; the condition hasn’t disappeared. For women who have been through years of agony with endometriosis, the hefty physical toll of carrying and birthing could be the last straw.

In brighter news, a new medication for the treatment of endometriosis symptoms has been approved in Australia, so there may be a glint of a silver lining on the horizon. In the meantime, though, having children should be a choice that women feel able to make in accordance with the life they want to live – not as a means to a pain-free future.
