If you’re struggling with painful, heavy periods – or simply want more information on how you can manage your bleeding – then your GP should be your first port of call. They can also help with the mental health impact of your periods, which shouldn’t be underestimated.

Holli Rubin, a psychotherapist at the private mental health care centre The Soke, says that pain – and the knock-on effect it can have on your life – can take its toll on your mental wellbeing.

“Pain goes straight to a physical discomfort that puts us on the defensive and makes it difficult to be in our bodies,” she says. “That then has a ripple effect that cascades into our mental health, causing a negative feedback loop.

“In a relationship, pain can impact the desire or ability to connect emotionally, leaving one feeling very alone and sending that message onwards to a partner or friend, which impacts the other and consequently the relationship.”

So, what’s the best way to deal with the impact of heavy, painful periods on your relationships and mental health? Below are a few of the tips Rubin recommends.

1. Acknowledge the pain

As women, we’re well-versed in brushing off our pain and ‘getting on with things’, but doing so can undermine the very real and challenging pain you’re experiencing.

Taking a moment every so often to recognise that and give yourself the credit you deserve will make it easier for you to show yourself empathy when you’re struggling.

2. Look after yourself

If you can, keep looking after yourself throughout your periods. Cook nutritious food, have warm baths and surround yourself with loved ones.

It might not make a difference to your pain, but looking after yourself in this way will help fill your cup and give you the energy to do more of the things you love and bring you joy.

3. Communicate what you’re going through

Perhaps the hardest but most important thing you can do is to talk about your experience with those around you. While it might feel easier to make up excuses and ignore texts from friends and family when you’re in pain, opening up about what’s going on will allow those who love you to support you and provide some love and comfort.

Being honest about what you need and don’t need can also make you feel more comfortable. For example, if you don’t have the energy to socialise face to face but still want to chat, your friend might be able to give you a call on the phone to check in or send some voice notes you can respond to when you’re feeling better.
