As with most things mental health, it’s important to be familiar with the warning signs of maternal rage, because “it’s a lot easier to regulate ourselves before we’ve lost it”, says Harris. Signs might be physical – a burning, rising sensation in your chest or bursts of frenetic energy. Emotional cues might include increasing resentment, irritability or feeling unheard.

But there might be times when the fury feels unstoppable. In those moments, it’s important to know what will bring you back into your window of tolerance. Those steps will vary from person to person and rage incident to rage incident. But Harris says that movement often helps, as can – conversely – doing nothing and simply going back to bed.

Repairing after an angry outburst is just as important. Harris observes that, broadly speaking, many millennial parents are good at apologising and making amends with their children – and being able to do that helps to break feelings of post-anger guilt.

This is why normalising mum rage, without judgment, is so important. The more we talk about it, the less alone we all feel. My rage felt overwhelming at the beginning, but once I found other mums who also struggled with it, everything felt lighter.

I let go of expectations around motherhood, and before I knew it, those nightly outbursts became a distant memory. Now, finally, I’m able to focus on the joy of seeing my son grow up.
