However, all is not equal. When Chelsea won the Women’s FA Cup last weekend, the club was awarded £25,000 in prize money. That’s just over 1% of the £1.8 million prize money awarded in the men’s competition. It’s even less than the £47,875 won by Warrington Rylands, the FA Vase winners – a match that drew in 6,000 fans versus the 41,000 strong audience that attended the Women’s FA final.

Men still hugely out-earn men given the gender disparity in prize money. At the Women’s World Cup in 2019, the winning team (USA) received £3.2 million – double what they won in 2015. Yet, for the 2018 men’s World Cup, the prize money was worth £315 million. That’s 10 times as much. Next year, we can watch as the women’s Euro 2022 tournament takes centre stage. Uefa has announced that it is to double the fund, meaning the 16 teams will share £13.7 million. Yet, this summer the 24 men’s teams shared a pot of £317 million.

And that’s even without mentioning club level wages, which are staggeringly different. Fran Kirby, Chelsea’s heroic striker, has a world-record salary of up to £300,000 a year. Romelu Lukaku, who also plays for Chelsea, is on £450,000 a week.
