Lots of walking enthusiasts claim that you can walk yourself happy – and the research checks out. A randomised controlled study compared the effects of exposure to nature scenes or physical exercise alone (think: walking on a treadmill in four walls of a gym) versus walking outside in nature.

Unsurprisingly, the power of walking in nature rose head and shoulders above the two and resulted in lower cortisol (stress) levels than solely viewing nature.

“From a mental health perspective, walking can be incredibly beneficial,” says Lauren Lepley, an advanced personal trainer and certified positive psychology coach.

Moreover, enjoying the outdoors can enhance your mood and boost your sense of wellbeing which, she says, is a sure-fire way to be present in the moment.
