Equipment needed: antibacterial spray, microfibre cloth, washing machine and/or bath

Recommended technique: “Yoga and exercise mats can be kept clean between uses by spraying them directly with antibacterial cleaning spray, allowing it to sit for the recommended time and then wiping dry with a microfibre cloth,” Oakey explains.

“Some brands of yoga mats can be popped in the washing machine for ease, but always check the washing instructions that came with your mat. If yours isn’t machine washable, then soaking it in a bath of warm soapy water and scrubbing down with a soft brush will also give a great deep clean.”

He continues: “Resistance bands can also be cleaned by submerging them in soapy water. Just be careful you don’t leave your mats and bands in direct sunlight to dry, as this can damage the materials.

“Foam rollers cannot be submerged in water as they are very absorbent. Instead, simply spritz and wipe down the same way you would your free-standing weights.”
