“With eating out becoming more of a luxury, people are going to look for signifiers of quality and dependability when choosing where to eat, and nothing reassures you that you’re in a safe pair of hands quite like a plate with the restaurant’s logo on it,” says food writer Thom Archer.

“A plate with the restaurant’s logo on it says classic hospitality,” he explains. “It says: ‘Here is your food and, as George Foreman said of his Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine, I’m so proud of it that I put my name on it.’” Thom cites Bavette Bistro and Empire Cafe – both in Leeds – as two restaurants with their logos on the plates, and adds: “I would trust them with my life, let alone with my tea.”
