“If we’re cognitively intelligent, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re streetwise or emotionally or socially intelligent,” says Dr Amanda Potter, a charted psychologist and host of The Chief Psychology Officer podcast. “Each of these intelligences is quite different, and the reality is that we can have varying degrees of each.”

There are several theories about the different kinds of intelligence we can fall into. Developmental psychologist Howard Gardner suggests there are eight kinds, which range from being musically gifted to being able to connect with nature; psychologist Robert Sternberg recognises three intelligences that include being creative and being practical. But, what is becoming more certain is that intelligence is more than just how academically bright you are.

“You can be clever and bright in many different ways. Everybody is unique, has different strengths and adds value in different ways,” says Dr Potter. “You don’t need to have a high IQ to be bright. It means that there’s something else you can bring. You might be streetwise, socially intelligent or good at looking after other people.”
