This week will undoubtedly go down in history as a landmark moment in women’s health. On Monday, a new study from Public Health Scotland revealed that no cases of cervical cancer had been detected in women who had been fully vaccinated against HPV, a result that led the team to conclude the vaccine is “highly effective” in preventing the development of the cancer.

While researchers cannot say for certain that the vaccine prevents cervical cancer altogether, the results are certainly promising. It’s a medical triumph that will likely save thousands of lives, and with immunisation now being offered to boys and girls in a bid to prevent other forms of cancer caused by the virus, its impact will only continue to grow.

As part of one of the first generations to receive the vaccine, it’s incredible to think that we could be looking at a future where cervical cancer is eradicated. As it stands, there are around 3,197 new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in the UK every year, with an average of 850 deaths, but the NHS aims to eradicate cervical cancer by 2040. If the results of this study are anything to go by, we’re well on our way to making that future a reality.
