Most women – 60% – said that they felt the need to ‘push through’ their symptoms, working despite not feeling well enough to carry on.

And that’s not all. Women with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and endometriosis reported even worse experiences, with 81% saying they had had a bad time at work due to their symptoms. Unsurprisingly, cramps, fatigue and bloating were found to directly negatively impact women’s careers, with 63% saying they felt less able to concentrate while they’re on their period and 38% reporting that they feel less confident at work.

This is far from the only time that research has uncovered the negative impact that a lack of menstruation and menopause support can have on women at work. In fact, new research published earlier this month found that almost a quarter (23%) of working women had considered quitting due to the impact of their symptoms.

Not only can this have a disastrous effect on women’s self-esteem and wellbeing, but it also has the potential to widen the already gaping gender pay gap.
