Social media brings them to life,” Hurd continues.

Another gift from the internet? Small businesses. From Instagram start-ups to vintage sellers, unique, homemade pieces are only a click away, not tucked behind a town’s high street you might never wander down. Lucy Barlow, interior designer, founder of Barlow & Barlow and creator of Kin House’s viral, maximalist aesthetic, emphasises the importance of finding those one-off gems. “Maximalism is all about personality and the internet means you can find things for your home that no one else has. My advice is to collect things over time that tell a story – it doesn’t matter if they ‘match’ or ‘go’ – happy clashing creates interest and, for me, that sparks joy,” she says.
