“Spring cleaning time is a great opportunity to clean upholstery and rugs. If your sofa cushions can be removed, take them off and wash them according to care label instructions. If they are not machine washable or removable then spot cleaning is a great alternative.

“Take any rugs outside and hang them over a washing line or across the back of some chairs – take an old broom or tennis racket and beat the rug. Yes, it’s a bit old fashioned, but it’s a great way once a year to get out extra dirt and dust that the vacuum can’t reach. It also prevents dirt from damaging the rug’s foundation.”

For the bedroom

“Give your mattress some TLC. Begin with an all-over vacuum of the mattress to remove dead skin, dust and hair that can collect on the surface. Then tackle any stains. Always remember to dab at them, not rub. This helps to lift the stain rather than drive it deeper into the mattress. Cooler water is best. Just use a damp cloth and stain remover.

“Too much water is a bad idea because you don’t want to make your mattress too wet. If you have a steamer, this is a great optional step for those who want a deeper clean or who suffer from allergies. Aim your hand-held steamer over all the surface areas (including along the sides and the underside) of the mattress, but be careful not to let the mattress get too wet. Next, sprinkle the surface of your mattress with bicarbonate of soda and pat it into the fabric. Leave it for at least an hour to absorb any odours. Bicarb is brilliant for neutralising and removing smells, and the longer you leave it, the better the results. Finally, give your mattress another quick vacuum.”
