90s kids, an empowering new 2 Become 1 musical is coming to London

Ah, the 90s; it was a time in which Tamagotchis regularly demanded feeding, Sunny D was brand-new (and readily available), the Dream Phone kept ringing, and our local Blockbuster had all the movies we could ever need.

It was also the dawn of #girlpower – and we regularly bopped around the local disco to incredible music from badass women.

So it’s very exciting to hear that there’s an empowering 90s musical on the way to London.

2 Become 1, the brainchild of Kerrie Thomason and Natasha Granger, is set in the latter half of our favourite decade.

And, in a world obsessed with Titanic, Brad and Jen, Mr Big, and Bridget Jones, Jess finds herself dumped by her perfect man.

When they realise that their pal is doomed to a future of weeping into her Haagen-Dazs, Amanda, Molly, and Charlie decided to take Jess on a night out and unbreak her heart.

Cue a wild night out of platform trainers, speed dating, Bacardi Breezers, dance routines, and plenty of encounters with Mr Wrongs and Mr Rights. Will she meet her man in a minute? Or will she decide that nothing impresses her much?

Either way, things can only get better (natch).

“We really want to poke fun at the perceived glamour and shallowness of ‘90s pop culture, but in a very affectionate way –it was a time when strong bonds between female friends were actively celebrated and this is our tribute to that,” explains Kerrie.

“However, that’s not to say this is a show just for women – it was important to us that the show also includes the male perspective on dating so we interviewed men in local pubs to ask their frank opinions on how dating works, and these recordings will feature in the show.”

The soundtrack promises to be infectious, with songs from The Spice Girls, All Saints, B*Witched, Cher, Shania Twain, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera.

But it’s not just a light-hearted comedy pop musical; it also promises to delve into the sexual revolution of girl power, too.

The show, after enjoying a sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe earlier this year, is now coming to London for just a few weeks.

You can catch it at the King’s Head Theatre between 3 December 2016 and 7 January 2017.

Tickets for 2 Become 1 are available here.
