Yep, 2019 is the year of the vegan, and more people than ever are making the switch.
But going animal-free can be confusing. What can you eat, what can you wear, and do you need to overhaul your bathroom cabinets?
We’re answering seven of the most Googled questions about veganism, with a little help from YouTubers and vegan chefs, The Vegan Corner.
1. Why are vegans called vegans?
Vegan is just five letters short of vegetarian, and was originally coined by the founder of The Vegan Society to distinguish them.
But, as The Vegan Corner add, “being vegan isn’t just related to food – it’s a way of living aimed at reducing any sort of animal exploitation.”
That includes what you wear, what you put on your skin and how you wash your hair.
2. Are vegans healthier?
This is a tricky one, as it depends on your personal diet.
If you eat vegan-friendly biscuits, crisps and Pizza Hut for every meal, probably not.
However, vegan and vegetarian diets have been associated with a lower risk of heart disease and cancer – but not, sadly, with living longer.
3. What vegan beauty brands are in the UK?
Like we said, being vegan is about more than what you eat.
The main ingredients to watch out for are honey, beeswax and lanolin, which are all derived from animal by-products.
But instead of scouring the ingredients, shop a brand that’s already 100% vegan-certified and cruelty free such as Love Beauty and Planet.

5. How do vegans get their protein?
It’s the question most people have about vegan diets, and the answer could be simpler than you think.
“Protein contains amino acids, some of which we need to get from the food we eat,” say The Vegan Corner.
“If you’re eating a variety of foods, including whole plant foods such as legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and soy products, protein shouldn’t be a concern.”
6. How do vegans make cake?
The internet wants answers to all the important questions, clearly.
Apart from the eggs, most main cake ingredients are vegan, so The Vegan Corner suggest using your normal recipe and replacing eggs with ripe bananas or baking powder instead. Easy!
7. How do vegans cope living with non-vegans?
