Addictive new 'The Way We Met' Instagram account is an antidote to relationship doom and gloom

In a world of swipe-and-like dating apps and a rise in divorce rates, finding love can often be an exhausting and disheartening process.

But a new Instagram account hopes to eliminate the negative and give hope to all the romantics out there by sharing stories of how real-life couples have met.

From Facebook to the men's toilet, The Way We Met captures the unlikely, odd and fascinating ways people stumbled across their loved ones. It makes for highly addictive reading and has racked up more than 136,000 followers since it was created a month ago.

Its creator, 27-year-old Brooklyn Sherman, says its an antidote to reading story after story about divorce rates which can get depressing.

To test the waters she posted a request for stories on how individuals met their partners on a Facebook community page and was inundated with hundreds of anecdotes in reply.

"I was like, wow. Maybe I'm not the only one that loves to talk about love. It's obvious that other people in love love to share their stories."

With hundreds of stories still pouring in every day, Sherman said she tries to read as many as she can when she gets home from work and tries to lean away from  posting stories about couples who met online.

"It's sad because in a world where we have so many ways to connect, we're almost connecting so little. We're connecting so much online that we've actually become lonely," she said. "I really want to encourage people to go back out in the world and live life again and experience things and meet with people face to face again and have authentic conversations."

"You never know where you're going to meet someone. I featured a couple who met at a red light, another couple met at a karaoke competition. Another in a park while the girl was playing Frisbee. I want to encourage people to find the randomness of life that you get when you go out and create an experience. It's amazing what the world will give back in return."
