Angelina Jolie has confirmed that she will be reprising her mesmerising role as leading lady in the sequel to Disney’s Maleficent.
Jolie announced the news, which will have Disney fans (aka all of us) on the edge of their seats, in a recent interview with Deadline while promoting her upcoming film First They Killed My Father, which debuts this weekend at the Telluride Film Festival.
Articulating her clear passion for the project and accounting for the perception that sequels don’t always live up to expectation, Jolie said: “We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel.”
So far, we have zero details about the Maleficent sequel - other than the fact that, y'know, there is one and Jolie is coming back.
And, to be honest, we have no idea what the story will be about this time around. For those of you that have followed the story so far you may remember that all ends seemed pretty well tied up, which has us feeling ever so intrigued to what the second installment holds.
As fans will remember, the original film gave us a darker and more complex backstory to the much-loved tale of Sleeping Beauty. It tore apart the idea that the dark fairy was a jealous and vindictive sorceress, intent on destroying the younger and more beautiful princess with a cursed spinning wheel. Instead, it showed us a much softer side to who has always previously been referred to as the ‘Wicked Fairy’, explaining that her own previous heartbreak had caused her to become misunderstood and bitter, but is actually a caring and maternal character, in the end wanting nothing but to protect Aurora.
The original production was praised for its incredible transformation of Jolie as the evil-looking fairy, imaginative other-worldly setting and utterly magical visual effects, so we’re hoping for an equally beautiful experience when Maleficent 2 hits cinemas. We're also desperate to know whether or not the perfectly cast Elle Fanning will be back as Princess Aurora, as it would be great to see these two women work together again.
Maleficent 2 marks Jolie’s return to the world of acting: she has mostly worked behind the camera as a director of late - and she took a year off to be with her family after her separation from Brad Pitt, with whom she shares five children.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at a recent Q&A, Jolie explained: “Right now, I don’t have anything to direct that I feel passionate about like this, so I’ll do some acting. I’ve taken over a year off now, because of my family situation, to take care of my kids.
“I’ve been needed at home. I hope [to work again] in the months to come.”
We can’t wait to see what the sequel has in store and are looking forward to seeing the acting heavyweight back in front of the camera.
