How is that possible?
It’s been ten years since the juggernaut known as Twilight reared its ugly head and devoured all popular culture before it.
Just ten years ago everyone was mad for the vampiric love story, first penned by Stephenie Meyer in 2005 and released as a movie in 2008. We all remember it like it was yesterday, right? The stern divides between fans who were team Edward (Robert Pattinson as a beautiful, remote vampire who hates your smell) or team Jacob (Taylor Lautner as a ripped werewolf who is fiercely loyal and objectively superior), the romance between the film’s stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, the long, drawn-out movie series.
It’s crazy to think that just ten years ago you couldn’t move without seeing Taylor Lautner on the cover of a men’s magazine, talking about how he got in shape for the series’ many shirtless scenes by existing on a diet consisting exclusively of eggs and chicken. And yet, here we are. Life comes at you pretty fast, right?
One person did forget all about Twilight mania, though: Anna Kendrick. And she really has no excuse, because she was in it.
Kendrick starred as Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) best friend, a no-nonsense high schooler called Jessica who welcomed Bella into her group, invited her shopping, explained all about the enigmatic and mysterious Cullens (Pattinson et al) and basically kickstarted the plot into motion.
Without Jessica, one could say, there might be no Twilight.
Once things start heating up (or cooling down, really, as vampires are always cold) with Edward, Jessica sort of disappears from the picture. It’s really Bella and Edward’s story from then on in, with a little light seasoning of Jacob for good measure. (Poor Jacob!) So we don’t blame Kendrick for erasing Twilight from her memory. In fact, some fans felt the same way.
Kendrick isn’t the only now-huge Hollywood star who got their start in the franchise. While some of the series’ top-billed actors have faded from the industry (Kellan Lutz, anyone?), there was true acting talent buried in the background of several scenes.
Rami Malek played a powerful vampire in the very last movie of the series, a role that catapulted him first to Mr. Robot and then to the role of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Christian Serratos, the actress who played one of Bella’s schoolmates in the early films, went on to star in The Walking Dead.
And then there’s Mackenzie Foy, the child actress cast as Bella and Edward’s vampire baby Renesmee Cullen. She, like Kendrick, has turned her early start in Twilight into a storied career, starring in Interstellar, The Conjuring and this month’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms as Clara.
We hope Kendrick doesn’t forget about her pivotal role in the Twilight series again. But if she does, we’re always around to remind her.
