These beautifully redesigned minimalistic scary film posters give horror an arty edge

Published

With the nights drawing in and Halloween approaching, it's certainly the season for a good horror film or two.

These beautifully redesigned posters for horror films like American Psycho and The Shining and even taking in the comedy horror classic Shaun of the Dead add an artistic feel to the gore and guts that scary films are known for.

Picking out a key prop from the film, the posters manage to capture the essence of what makes each film so frightening with a strikingly simple design.

For example, Carrie is represented by a prom queen's crown, setting up the premise of the film, which takes place on a prom night in a high school, and The Shining is shown with a typewriter and an axe - instantly conjuring up the famous image Jack Nicholson breaking down a door with an axe that the film is known for. The simplistic design makes the posters very effective.

The posters were created by the website halloweencostumes.com, just in time for the scariest night of the year. The original post was written as a quiz, with the aim of guessing which film each poster was representing, but we just enjoy looking at the amazing designs.

If you're a fan of the posters, it's possible to download them and set them as your computer or mobile background from the site. Scroll down to see more of the incredible designs, and see if your favourite horror movie has made it.
