Wondering what happened to Felix and Lucy?

If you watched Bird Box on Netflix over the Christmas break, you’re not alone. The horror film, which stars Sandra Bullock as a woman attempting to save two children from malignant supernatural forces , has been watched by over 45 million people so far – sparking a social media phenomenon and the inadvisable ‘Bird Box Challenge’.

But if you are among the 45 million who tuned in to watch Bird Box, you’re likely to have some questions. Why did characters’ eyes change colour? Where did the monsters originally come from? And what on earth happened to Felix and Lucy?

We’re still in the dark as far as the first two questions are concerned, but Bird Box’s director has now shed some light on the final mystery. Speaking to People, Susanne Bier said she thinks Felix (Machine Gun Kelly) and Lucy (Rosa Salazar) had a certain destination in mind after they stole the car and left the safe house.

“I think [the grocery store] was their plan, but we don’t know,” she said.

“I think that that’s where they wanna go, but I actually think it’s quite exciting that we don’t know exactly where they went.”

Biers, who also directed the smash-hit TV series The Night Manager, became the first female director to win a European Film Award in 2013 for her movie Love is All You Need. Despite her previous success, she said she was unprepared for the global excitement around Bird Box.

“It’s almost unbelievable, I have to remind myself that it’s real because it’s so insanely huge,” she said. “It’s almost like a phenomenon.

“I don’t think any of us really anticipated it,” she continued. “You can be proud and really happy about a movie and feel that it’s a really great movie, but you can’t ever anticipate when the hype takes on.”

Biers also weighed in on whether there is likely to be a Bird Box sequel. “We only just finished it!” she said. “It’s funny, I’m kind of reading people asking for a sequel and I’m like, ‘Hey, hey, hey, we really just finished!’ So let’s just enjoy it for now.”

Sandra Bullock has spoken about Bird Box’s success

Sandra Bullock has also spoken about the success of Bird Box, which was only released on Netflix rather than being shown in cinemas.

Online streaming “has elevated the bar for cinema,” Bullock told The Independent. “[Before], if you were a superhero, you were able to get a movie made; anything else was not getting made.

“Now, with streaming, we have all kinds of work available, so we can act again. This wonderful business is changing, and providing so many more opportunities for women, and people of colour. There’s a great change happening.”
