Britain's most desirable town to live in revealed

Published

The seaside town of St Ives in Cornwall has been voted the UK's most desirable place to live in a new poll.

The survey by property website RightMove asked 2,606 Brits across the country, aged between 18 – 65, what their ideal home would look like if money were no object and what location in the UK they would like live in.

Cornwall's seaside town was voted the most desirable place to live, followed by coastal locations of Poole and Brighton.  When asked what their ideal house size was, respondents said that the perfect setup would be three bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living rooms, a utility room and - most importantly - located a short walk from the pub.

Historic cities of Edinburgh and York came fourth and fifth on the list of 10.

When choosing an area to live in, having good transport links and a pub within walking distance were found to be more important than being near a park or supermarket.

Unexpectedly, if people could have a house of any size, the average person wouldn't go for a mansion. Only 1% would like to live in a castle, while the majority would choose a detached house with three bedrooms, two living rooms and two bathrooms.

When asked about any additional features in the home, a practical utility room was considered more desirable than luxury features such as a conservatory or walk-in wardrobe.

"While we gave people the chance to choose a home fit for royalty, on average they said they would be happy in a more modest home with plenty of space and practical features, instead of rattling around in a massive mansion," said Miles Shipside, Rightmove Director and Housing Market Analyst.

According to RightMove, an 'ideal' three bedroom, detached home in St Ives would cost on average £431,977.
