The ‘dive in’ method

Although more clients are coming to Murray craving a career change, many people don’t know where to even begin when it comes to making the transition. Many people don’t know if they have the confidence to make the change at all. It’s not surprising, Murray explains: changing careers can be terrifying.

“We all tend to get stuck in jobs, simply because that’s kind of the way we originally went,” says Murray. “A lot of people think, ‘Well, I can only do what I’ve been trained to do for the last 20 years.’ Especially if people are in careers for a long time. It’s very hard to feel that you can break out of that.”

And that’s where the ‘dive in’ method comes in. Here are the six steps that Murray takes her clients through to help them first break out of their old careers and then find an effective path towards a new one

Discovery

The first phase is discovery. “It’s basically about getting back in touch with who you are and with your values and beliefs – with what’s important to you,” Murray says. “It’s about discovering your purpose and understanding why you might want a career change.”

During this phase, the focus is on self-discovery and being honest with yourself about whether or not you are happy and fulfilled in your current role. By the end of this phase, you should know for sure whether or not a career change really is right for you.

Insight

Next comes the insight phase. This is “to determine a bit more about your strengths, what makes you tick”, says Murray.

During this phase, Murray helps her clients assess their strengths and their weaknesses. “What kind of things hold you back, where are your barriers, what are your limiting beliefs, and so on,” she says.

This will help you escape from the fear of leaving behind a career you’ve spent years building.
