Talking about money at work can be awkward, but asking for a raise is even more so.

It is never an easy conversation to have. And yes, seeking out a pay rise is intimidating, but if you are good at your job, diligent, respected and an integral part of a team, you probably deserve one.

However, according to YouGov data released last year, over half (53%) of British adults have never asked for one. There is also a gender gap when it comes to pay increases, and women are not only less likely to ask, but also less likely to receive one in the long run. Out of all British people who’ve held a paying job, the numbers show that 46% of men have asked for a pay rise, compared to just 33% of women. Three in 10 men (31%) have asked for a pay rise and been successful, compared to 21% of women.

This data may deter women from asking for a higher wage, but doing so is important for reasons other than financial release. Asking for a raise shows others (and reinforces the idea to yourself) that you know what you are worth and that you take your job and your profession seriously. It will also keep you engaged and interested in your role. Why? Because you are being paid the right price for the expertise you provide.
