Not only are you in a new job, but you’re also discovering the vagaries of a different industry so it’s entirely understandable you feel unsettled. But it’s highly unlikely you already know with certainty that you’ve made a critical mistake. My advice is to stay the course for a bit longer before writing off this move.

I’m guessing you’ve been allocated what you regard as unfulfilling work because your new bosses are trying to discern your abilities. They’re taking as much of a chance with you as you are with them. Because you’ve come from a different background, they may share your fear around your suitability. I reckon they’re testing your staying power and that is a good enough reason to stick around for at least six to 12 months.

Looking on the bright side, you seem to enjoy the office environment and that’s something to focus and build upon. Your probation period is the perfect opportunity for you to get under the skin of your new world. Use this time wisely by asking testing questions and volunteering for extra duties while all the time observing colleagues as well as bosses. Identify mentors and role models whose career trajectory you’d like to follow and spend as much time with them as you can.
