Why is the toxic workplace still such a big problem?

According to Davis, workplace toxicity is so deeply embedded in how we work, it’s inevitable that elements remain within our workplaces.

“Despite huge inroads into developing healthier workplace culture in recent years, sadly toxicity and discrimination still exist in the UK workplace for a number of reasons,” she says.

1. It’s always been this way

“Historical legacy of discrimination and inequality on all levels has left a lasting impact,” she says. “From bosses who had to struggle themselves to ‘get to the top’ so expect others to do the same to socio-political and economic bias which shows in deeper-seated discrimination. This level of inequality can be challenging to completely eradicate without a seismic shift of leadership.”

2. Unconscious bias and ‘nice’ leadership

Toxicity can also be unintentional, too, but this can be just as harmful.

“Equally, ‘nice’ bosses who don’t want to challenge poor behaviour or address conflict can exacerbate the problem without realising it, leaving a culture of mistrust – feeling like you are walking on eggshells,” she says.

3. Leadership and culture

“Leaders define the culture, so if the senior team isn’t actively prioritising a culture of psychological safety, diversity and equity, it’s sending the message that this isn’t important, or even that toxicity can be tolerated,” she says.

4. Fear of retaliation and resistance to change

Fear of change can also be a reason for ingrained toxicity.

“It can be hard to be the one to put your neck on the line and speak up,” says Davis. “If you’ve tried before and met no change, it’s even more demoralising. Cultural change takes time, and where people are used to the status quo, they may resist any changes or even be unaware that they are the problem.”
