When Clara Amfo gives career advice, we listen.
Clara Amfo: radio presenter extraordinaire, women’s opportunities advocate and renown sneakerhead. After hustling her way from KISS FM marketing intern to taking over from the legendary Fearne Cotton as the host of The Official Chart on BBC Radio 1, Amfo has become an inspiration for young women hoping to break into the industry.
At Stylist we’re big Amfo fans. From quizzing her on her favourite footwear to asking her speak at this year’s Stylist Live, we’re always keen to hear her words of wisdom.
That’s why we’ve asked the broadcaster, as her career is soaring higher than ever, to give us her top three tips for women who are trying to break into the media industry. But instead of predictably asking her ourselves, we invited music journalism student Emma Francique to quiz Amfo instead.
After pulling a few crackers (it is Christmas after all), the pair got down to business discussing everything from what women need to do to break down barriers in the industry to the role models in Amfo’s life who have inspired her most.
You can watch the full video above to see the full interview, but to give you a little taster, check out Amfo’s three biggest tips for young women just starting out in media below.

2. Know when to say no
“I believe in going for opportunities, but you know some things just won’t feel right in your gut and it’s okay to walk away from things.”
3. Network with other women
“I would say network with other women. No one will have your back like another woman in this industry and just in life.
