Clueless is set to become a musical

Almost twenty years after it hit the big screen, Clueless is on its way to becoming a stage musical on Broadway.

Director Amy Heckering confirmed the news, telling Entertainment Tonight, “I’ve written the, what they call the book and it’s a jukebox musical.”

She revealed that Kristin Hanggi, director of Broadway show Rock of Ages will direct the new stage show, while Dodger Theatricals, the company behind for Jersey Boys and Into the Woods will produce it.

While Heckerling didn’t offer any details on songs, it seems her biggest worry at the moment is the cast. “Well casting - that's like going to be like the main problem,” she said.

Alicia Silverstone played the fashion savvy, wealthy teenager Cher Horowitz in the original film, starring alongside Brittany Murphy, Stacey Dash, Paul Rudd and Donald Faison.

Last year, before the musical was confirmed, Heckerling suggested there were a few stars eager to fill Cher's Mary-Jane shoes.

"Katy Perry has expressed interest, and I love her to death," she told Rolling Stone at the time. If Perry couldn't couldn't find time in her busy schedule, she added, "Maybe Iggy Azalea would do it!" after the singer channelled Cher in her video for Fancy.

It's yet to be confirmed when the musical will open on Broadway. "Everything goes so slowly, and I go, 'Wow this takes a long time,'" Heckerling said. "I thought movies took a long time. It's hard to know with Broadway when things will happen."
