A Giant Panda has proved you can never be too old to be a proud parent, after giving birth to a female cub at the grand old age of 78 (human) years.

Li Li the Panda welcomed her baby into the world at 14:51 on July 24th at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base in southwest China, and is already showing mothering instincts according to workers –carefully picking up and cradling her offspring, and giving her cuddles, as these pictures show.

Giant Pandas usually have an average life span of 25 years, and at 19, Li Li is no spring chicken. But that didn’t stop her from taking a proactive role in the birth – breaking off the umbilical cord herself once her baby was born.

Luckily for Li Li, her pregnancy was short – giving birth only 128 days after she was artificially inseminated. And looking at these adorable pictures of the two together, she’ll be showing her pride and joy off to all the other Pandas at the breeding centre.
