It looks like Dancing on Ice will beat Strictly Come Dancing to making this progressive move.
Exciting news has emerged that ITV’s Dancing on Ice could be the first ever UK show of its kind to feature a same-sex couple, on its next series.
Ian Watkins, also known as H from the band Steps, is confirmed for the show’s 2020 line-up. Traditionally Dancing on Ice has always paired men and women together, regardless of the celebrity or dancer’s sexual orientation. But this year that is all set to change.
A source has revealed that Watkins pitched the idea of same sex couples to the production team. “After conversations with the Dancing on Ice production team, H enquired as to the possibility of being paired with a male professional skater,” said the source.
“Dancing on Ice were fully supportive of a same-sex partnership and as such this year H will be paired with Matt Evers.”
Evers is an American pairs skater, model and TV personality and has won the show several times before.
The news comes after the BBC’s much-loved show Strictly Come Dancing announced back in August that it was “completely open” to the idea of same-sex couples, although this year’s competition has not implemented that.
Stylist.co.uk asked ITV for a comment on the new series, but they were unable to confirm if Watkins and Evers would be paired together.
A spokesperson said: “We won’t be commenting on speculation around the Dancing on Ice pairings until closer to the new series in 2020.”
Although the entertainment industry is becoming more inclusive across the board, we still have a long way to go to achieve true representation, which is why a move like this would be so important.
We have a very good feeling about this, though, and come January we think you’ll be treated to the best Dancing on Ice series yet.
