Think your balance looks unusually low? This could be why…

Ah, technology. One minute we’re hopping from one site to the next looking for the ideal beaded bag or trainers for work, and then … no connection. Sound all too familiar?

Spare a thought for those who used their debit cards on Wednesday 29 August. If you did, there’s a possibility you may have been charged twice for any transactions you made on that day.

Due to a technical glitch, transactions made using Cardnet – a payment card processor part-owned by Lloyds Bank and First Data – may have been affected.

However, money came out of bank accounts twice but transactions only showed up once on various restaurant and shop receipts - with mainly Visa debit cards being affected.

Here’s everything you need to know if you think it may have happened to you.

How do I know if I’ve been affected and what can I do?

First thing’s first, check your bank statement. If you’ve been charged twice it will be noted in your statement.

However, according to Lloyds Bank, only 5% of Cardnet machine transactions were affected on Wednesday 29 August.

Don’t worry, they’re on it. Refunds have been issued automatically but it’s wise to double check your own records and bank statements, and contact your bank if you think you’ve been affected.

What can I do about it?

You can expect to receive a refund swiftly, so keep an eye on your bank account.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “A small number of transactions processed last week by Cardnet were duplicated.

“All customers have now been automatically refunded, however customers can check their statements and get in touch with their banks if required.”

If you haven’t already received a refund then you can expect one within 10 days.

So if your bank balance is looking strangely low, this could be why – or it could just be that tipsy online shop you did the other night…
