Design company creates amazing sofa fort to shut the world out when you please

Published

It's one of our favourite childhood memories - dismantling our parents' sofas and using the cushions to create a fort to hide and play in with our friends and siblings. And now a design company has brought the idea to the adult realm with a stylish sofa that can be converted into a fort.

Hiding

Hiding in in the fort may bring back some memories from childhood...

Barcelona-based design duo Alvaro Goula and Pablo Figuera have created the Orwell sofa, a futon with a difference. Its toweringly tall back and roof allows you to zip down a front curtain panel and shut the world out entirely, hiding within your sofa.

On the duo's website, the product is described as "is a piece of furniture somewhere between a sofa, a bed, and a 'cabin.' [...] The original idea of the product... was to recapture that intimacy which can sometimes be lost, even within our own homes."

The sofa's name, Orwell, is a reference to George Orwell's 1984, whose characters want to escape the oppressive dystopian world they live in where even their thoughts are monitored.

But its resemblance to a childhood fort is what is drawing most attention. "Orwell invites you to rest it in its interior and resuscitate that childhood memory of a “cabin”, that magical, hidden place that all children wished they had," the designers wrote on their site.

Relaxing in our own sofa fort - the dream?

The futon can be used as a sofa or a bed, with pictures on Goulda Figuera's site showing different ways of using it, from resting to reading. "The heavy quilted curtains insulate against sound, and its size, similar to that of a bed, allows it to be used either sitting or lying down."

Ideal for a living room, office, or even a bedroom, the sofa offers you a way to cocoon yourself away for few hours, hopefully undisturbed.

Although the Orwell sofa is not currently available for sale, the designers have been nominated for various design awards, gaining publicity. We hope that the idea is picked up by a retailer soon. Ikea, we're looking at you.
