Baby's love interest, dance instructor Johnny Castle, was brilliantly portrayed by the late Patrick Swayze in the 1987 classic and ABC has not yet settled on an actor to tackle the role.

The TV take will have a key connection to the original - Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the film's screenplay, is acting as executive producer.

American Horror Story's Jessica Sharzer will write the small screen musical and Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Septembers of Shiraz) is on board to direct.
